Women have been an integral part of shaping the construction industry. Women in Construction Week is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements and advancements of women who are breaking barriers in the construction industry. Satellite Shelters is proud to shine a spotlight on the incredible contributions women have made in the construction industry.
What is Women in Construction Week?
Women in Construction (WIC) Week is an annual celebration to promote the role of women in the construction industry. This week is used to help members raise awareness for the opportunities available to women in the construction industry and the growing role that women have in various construction industry jobs. This week is organized by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and is taking place from March 2nd to 8th, 2025.
The Rise of Women in Construction
Thanks to programs like the Million Women in Construction Community Pledge, the percentage of women in construction is steadily growing, with more female contractors and leaders stepping into important roles. NAWIC is working to increase the number of women in the construction industry by bringing awareness to the various career paths that the industry holds and encouraging women to discover their passion in the construction industry.
Impact of Women in Construction on the Mobile Office and Modular Building Industry
Cindy Dekker, a Satellite Shelters Chicago-based sales representative and a NAWIC member for 25 years, is an inspiring woman in construction. Her work shows how professional women in construction are changing industries like mobile offices and modular buildings.
Through NAWIC, members can access networking events to meet other women who hold diverse roles within the industry. This networking is crucial for gaining knowledge and tailoring mobile office spaces to meet customer’s needs.
Another key benefit of the NAWIC is members have access to certification programs allowing them to explore educational opportunities that pertain to the construction industry. Dekker was able to take a blueprint course that gave her the essential knowledge to help customers create custom modular spaces for their job sites. These educational opportunities ensure that members stay current with the latest industry trends and advancements.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Women Construction Workers
Camp NAWIC
Camp NAWIC is a program that introduces high school students to the construction world. This weeklong camp allows them to learn about different construction jobs. They visit work sites, learn hands-on skills, and see what working in the industry is like. The camp also helps students learn about careers they might not have considered.
Block Kids Building Program
The Block Kids Building Program is similar to Camp NAWIC, except it’s targeted toward elementary school students. It allows kids to use their imagination and learn about building. Students will receive block kits with materials to design and create construction projects, which will then go into regional and national competitions.
Why Women in Construction Matter
Women in construction matter; they not only bring new perspectives and skill sets, but they can also help the industry grow and become stronger in the future. Many construction workers will retire by 2031, according to the National Center for Construction Education & Research.
One great way to solve this future dip now is by encouraging more women to join the industry. They bring important skills, like strong communication, which help finish work on time and within budget. They can also take on many different construction jobs, such as:
● Project managers
● On-site construction workers
● Engineers
● Architects
● Safety managers
● Accountants
● Lawyers
Supporting Women in Construction
During Women in Construction Week and beyond, it is imperative that companies representing the construction industry continue to support their employees. Through the efforts of organizations like the National Association of Women in Construction, companies can raise awareness and create more opportunities for women to excel in various construction roles.
